Meet the Shariah Committee who are responsible to advise Etiqa Family Takaful Berhad and Etiqa General Takaful Berhad in ensuring its business, affairs and activities comply with Shariah.

Associate Professor Dr Aznan Hasan
Dr Aznan is currently an Associate Professor in Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance at the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM).
 
He is the current President of the Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance (ASAS). He is also the Deputy Chairman of Shariah Advisory Council (SAC) of the Securities Commission (SC) and a former member of the SAC of Bank Negara Malaysia. Dr. Aznan serves as Chairman of the Shariah Advisory Board, Barclays Capital (DIFC, Dubai), a member of the Shariah Advisory Boards, ABSA Islamic Bank (South Africa), FNB Bank, Yasaar Limited, Khalij Islami, European International Islamic Bank (EIIB), Amanahraya Berhad, Amanah Raya Investment Bank Labuan, Employee Provident Fund and some other financial institutions and corporate bodies at both local and international level. He also serves as a Shariah consultant to Maybank Investment Bank. He is a registered Shariah advisor for the Islamic Unit Trust Schemes and Islamic securities (Sukuk), SC. He is also the Chairman of Shariah Committee of Amanah Hartanah Bumiputra.
 
Within the Maybank group, Dr Aznan is the Chairman of the Shariah Committee of Maybank Islamic Berhad since 1 May 2014 and Non-Independent Non-Executive Director of Maybank Islamic Berhad since 25 April 2019.
 
Dr Aznan is also a prominent author in Islamic finance and to date, has produced a number of books and publications in journals and has presented several conference papers / proceedings at various international events / conferences.
 
Dr Aznan received his first degree in Shariah from the University of al-Azhar and a Master’s degree in Shariah from Cairo University with distinction (mumtaz). He then obtained his PhD from the University of Wales, Lampeter, United Kingdom.
Dr. Sarip Adul
Dr. Sarip Adul
A senior lecturer at University Malaysia Sabah. He obtained his first degree in Shariah from the University of Al-Azhar, Egypt and Master in Fiqh and Usul Al-Fiqh from University of Jordan. He later pursued his PhD in Shariah at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and obtained his doctorate in 2015. He is the former member of Fatwa Council for Sabah and currently sits as a Shariah Committee member of Baitulmal Sabah. He was the Shariah Committee member of Maybank Islamic from 2011 to 2015. He is also a registered Shariah Advisor for the Islamic Unit Trust Schemes and Islamic Securities (Sukuk), Securities Commission of Malaysia. In relation to the takaful industry, he sits as the Shariah Committee member of Etiqa Takaful Berhad since 2011. He actively participated as a speaker in various seminars, events and television programs relating to Shariah, Islamic law and da’wah.

Dr. Rusni Hassan is a Professor and Deputy Dean at the IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, IIUM. She graduated with LLB (Honours), LLB (Shariah) (First Class), Master of Comparative Laws (MCL) and Ph.D in Law. She was a member of Shariah Advisory Council Bank Negara Malaysia, the highest legal body that ascertained the Islamic law for the purposes of Islamic financial business in the country from 2010 to 2016. She is the Shariah Committee member for a number of institutions in Malaysia including Association of Islamic Banking Institutions Malaysia (AIBIM). Internationally, she is the Shariah Committee member for Housing Development Finance Corporation and Housing Development Corporation, Maldives. She is a registered Shariah Advisor with the Securities Commission Malaysia.

She is also active in the Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance Malaysia (ASAS) and the International Council of Islamic Finance Educators (ICIFE) where she is the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary for both associations respectively. She has spoken extensively in seminars, workshops, conferences and trainings on various Islamic Finance issues. Her publication includes books on Islamic Banking and Takaful, Islamic Banking under Malaysian Law, Corporate Governance of Islamic Financial Institutions and many articles in local and international journals. She has received awards as a Promising Researcher at IIUM in 2012.

Her works and contribution to Islamic Finance has also been recognized internationally when she was listed among the Top 10 Women in Islamic Finance by CPI Financial in 2013 and been awarded as Most Talented Women Professional in Islamic Banking, Asia Islamic Banking Excellence Awards, CMO Asia, 2014; and Women of Distinction in her contribution in the field of Islamic Finance and law by Venus International Women Awards (VIWA 2016).

Dr. Abdul Rahim is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) and Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Muamalat, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). He is also the Independent Director of Etiqa General Takaful Berhad & Etiqa Family Takaful Berhad since October 2017. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Accounting from the University of East London, and Master’s degree in Accounting and Management Sciences, and PhD in Accounting in Islamic Institutions from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom.

Currently, Professor Abdul Rahim is a member of Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia’s (JAKIM) Muamalat Panel of Experts. He is also a member of the Shariah Committee for Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia, an Islamic microfinance provider. He is actively involved in teaching, research and consultancy on Islamic Finance, Islamic Accounting, Ethics and Governance, and Shariah Audit. He has published 3 books, and more than 40 papers in academic journals and chapters in books.

Professor Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar is the President and Chief Executive Officer at International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) since October 2017. Prior to his present position, he served as the Director-General at Islamic Research and Training Institute, Islamic Development Bank Group, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, being the first Malaysian appointed to that post. He accumulated vast experiences in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), having served in various capacities including Deputy Rector (Academic & Research), Dean of Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF) and Dean of Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences. Dato’ Dr Azmi holds a Bachelor’s degree in Science (Finance) and Master of Business Administration from Northern Illinois University, United States of America. Subsequently, he completed his PhD in Finance from Bangor University, Wales, United Kingdom. He also serves as the Islamic Finance Expert to the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam.
